After we review Micro Dungeons for D&D5e, we gladly return to deal with the ND Hobbies products, in particular, the Halloween edition of this necklace which is as practical as it is interesting; in case you don’t know it, know that they are collections of short and valuable old school dungeons.
As with all the other volumes, Micro Dungeons Halloween for D&D5e can also be purchased directly from the publisher’s store at around 5 dollars, about 5 euros.
Never Change a Winning Team
After reviewing Micro Dungeons together, I was particularly pleased to find that the publishers have decided to broaden the playability spectrum of their dungeons with this Halloween-themed booklet.
The team (or format) that wins does not change. Therefore, also in this case, the volume consists of about twenty pages and collects the beauty of 5 dungeons to be included in a larger campaign. The particularity of the themes makes it perfect to offer to your playgroup, exploring the themes and typical monsters related to this holiday.
Once again the options presented are essential without ever being banal.
5 Themed Dungeons
In this new selection, as expected from the title, we find themes and themed scenarios. Even the monsters are appropriate and the titles are more evocative than ever.
The collection includes: Crop Rotation, Mansion Dracula, Night of the Werecats, Prometheus Tower e The Howling House.
As can be easily understood from the titles, the atmosphere presented is that of horror stories, ghosts and vampires, perfect for the purposes announced by the title. In short, whoever would not like to deal with a Witch who is also a Werecat or an Overgrown Rat (and whoever does not remember the Nutries can have fun looking for references to other works).
As in the other volumes of this series, each dungeon includes a map, an introduction to the adventure and all the meetings. Also in this case there is no shortage of traps or puzzles for the different rooms. As per tradition, each dungeon includes at least one new monster specific to that adventure.
Product Particularities
We have seen together in this review how the themes of Mirco Dungeons Halloween are linked to a certain type of mood. This doesn’t mean that each of these tiny dungeons can’t be integrated into any campaign you start, or that cannot be the starting point for an alternative evening at the gaming table.
The Dungeon Master need not worry about the degree of challenge of each dungeon if he wants to include one or more of these scenarios in his campaign. In the appendix, there are also tables to make the encounters more or less dangerous. Once again we are faced with a particularly functional and intelligent choice, which makes the product extremely versatile.
Document management maintains the presence of direct hypertext links to the publisher page regarding spells or to the appendix; in the latter all the stat blocks for new monsters are present.
Micro Dungeons Halloween Aesthetic Review
As for the other volumes of this series, the basic colours are sand, red and black. Dungeon maps are contained on a single page. Each map is surrounded by clearly visible and exhaustive boxes with descriptions of the rooms, monsters, possible traps and treasures.
The illustrations, except a golem which was drawn by Lady of Hats, are from the Openclipart site and are for public use.
Micro Dungeons Halloween Review Conclusion
This small collection is an essential product, easily transportable and decidedly versatile. Great for livening up an evening and providing a good alternative for a one-shot with newbies.
I’m sure it can also be useful for all groups and Dungeon Masters who want to intersperse a long campaign with some focused and atmospheric episodes.
