First I would like to thank 1985 Games for sending us four bags of the line Mystery Dice to try them and be able to give you our opinion in this review. 1985 Games is an American company based in Oregon. Its founders are a group of gamers looking for an ever-better way to play without interrupting the action. Their catalogue is very vast and includes, among other things, beautiful maps for the fights of which you can find our review here and a line of retro dice that we talk about here.
If after this review you want to buy a set of mystery dice, you can find them directly in the store at 9,99$. Don’t forget that by using our discount code NoDiceUnrolled15 you can take advantage of a 15% discount on your purchases.
Randomness in Purchasing
For some years now, mystery boxes have appeared (a bit in all product sectors). Whether it’s books, cosmetics or food, randomness seems to appeal to consumers who rely on the choices of others to try new products. So why not do it with our trusted friends of a thousand adventures? The Mystery Dice line offers the possibility to buy a complete set of 7 dice as a surprise. Inside the perfectly resealable envelopes with a pressure grip, you will find a d20, a d12, two d10s, a d8, a d6 and a d4.
Variability is guaranteed and the possibility of grabbing very special dice is decidedly high; in this review, we will see together what we discovered by opening the sachets of the Mystery Dice line that were sent to us.
Mystery Dice Technical Details Review
All the dice we received are extremely handy, with smooth edges and high-quality resin. Each set stands on its own but all share the well-balanced weight and obvious clarity of the numbers; something not to be overlooked especially when it comes to transparent dice.
However, wanting to analyze the individual sets, I can say that I particularly liked the ones with a marble effect and gothic numbers. Violet mixed with ultramarine blue, if at first glance they may seem very dark; but it is sufficient to pass them in direct light to be able to appreciate the veins and reflections that this set of dice can give.
The childish soul in me loved the transparent set that includes a miniature pigeon. The detail in the making is very high, the tip of colour given by the bright orange beak catches the eye as the dice roll. Even when it comes to a completely transparent dice, the font of the numbers in white is evident in any case, helping the legibility of the result obtained.
A Subscription System
If, like us, you are collectors of polyhedral dice, you should know that 1985 Games offers you a subscription service for the Mystery Dice line. At the cost of $19.95, you can receive 2 sets of mystery dice, 1 pin and 1 sticker every month in a special box.
The collection is continuously updated and therefore it will be quite difficult to receive duplicates; but, if it happens, you can always go ahead with Christmas presents for your players or your master. In short, being able to count on a random choice of dice in the formula “all flavours plus one”, why not take advantage of it?
The variety of dice contained in these mystery packages is such as to also allows you to receive sets that are much more expensive than the purchase price.
Conclusions of the Review of Mystery Dice
To conclude this review, I can say that Mystery Dice dice sets are well made, practical and always original. The price, even for the subscription system, is right with the market; considering the quality of the manufacturing of the products, in some cases even convenient.
They can be an original idea for a gift, as long as you are not consumed with curiosity and, once you open the bag, you manage to separate yourself from it!
