Toon’s Legends | Review

Nov 28, 2023 | reviews

In this review, we will talk about Toon’s Legends, a game that takes inspiration from both gamebooks and RPGs. Before we start, I want to thank Edizioni Epoké and Alessandro Ricchiuti for sending us a digital copy and allowing us to talk to you about the game.

At first glance, we find ourselves in our hands a delightful product, which conquers the reader with a truly enchanting aesthetic. Illustrations and graphics were followed by Viviana Forlese and I must say that the result is more than satisfactory. In fact, I would like to classify the product as suitable for all ages.

Toon’s Legend aims to relieve the player from the heaviness of complicated cards or complex systems; with few clear rules that leave the player with a lot of freedom, encouraging narrative. If we exclude the character sheets that we find at the end of the manual, Toon’s Legend in 91 pages in A5 format provides us with everything we need to start playing.

If you want to take a look at the product before purchasing it, you can find the quickstart on the Edizioni pokè website; in addition to the basic rules, it also contains an adventure ready to try. If, like me, you are won over by it, you can purchase Toon’s Legends in physical copy on Amazon at a cost of €18.

Toon’s Legends Mechanics Review

Toon’s Legends has a very streamlined rulebook, stripped of all the mechanical complications typical of other classic role-playing games. The entire system revolves around three branches of action:

  • Combat: concerns all tests faced with physique and agility.
  • Investigation: includes all those actions that affect the resolution of mysteries and discovery.
  • Social: this branch manages interactions of any type.

Each of these categories is associated with a die based on race, which will be followed by some changes based on the chosen class; it will decrease or increase the size of the die. Every time it is necessary to face a test, we will roll a 20 die and add the die associated with the test, trying to equal or exceed a value given by the master.

The Races of Toon’s Legends

Character creation in Toon’s Legends will take at least ten minutes, since you will only have to decide on race and class. The available breeds are:

  • Human: Rulers of cities, they are primarily skilled in research and social proof.
  • Elf: Experience has taught them that intelligence beats strength. They especially excel at social proof.
  • Dwarf: They are hardened like the metal they extract from the mountains. They prefer facts to words. They have a great propensity towards fighting and research.
  • Ogre: embodiment of strength and violence. In the fight they give their best.
  • Gnome: rare to see, they are especially skilled in research. The five senses are the main teachers of a gnome’s life.
  • Mixed Blood: They are also called Impure Blood. They are viewed with suspicion, but carry in their blood the best of two races.

Each of them has advantages and disadvantages in the three branches of action that we have seen previously. This simply translates into the type of die we will add to our d20. A special mention goes to the Mixed Bloods, whose specializations are given by the sum of the relative scores of the parents, subsequently halved. The manual is very clear and in just a few pages it provides a series of examples to further simplify and speed up this process.

Toon’s Legends Classes Review

In any self-respecting fantasy game, classes cannot be missing, which will specialize our adventurer. Those of Toon’s Legends are five and very classic. We will range from the fighter to the spellcaster, passing through stealth, priest and ranger.

Each class involves changes to the branches of action; in addition, we will be able to choose two Talents and a Skill from a very limited list. The relevant table then indicates the Life Points and Defense of our adventurer.

Toon’s Legends provides a quick levelling up (in a maximum of three levels) which guarantees improvements in terms of Life Points, Skills and Talents, also allowing us to enhance those in our possession.

Magic and Mana Points

Within Toon’s legends, there are seven different types of magic, which cover all areas. From soothing magic to destructive magic, through support, illusions and evocations. The common thread between these spells is the system that regulates them.

Whenever a character casts a spell, he must pay a cost in Mana Points. Some spells have the peculiarity of blocking the mana used for the spell and this reduces the caster’s spell availability.

The recovery system is based on the mechanics of short and long rests. A simple system which, based on the talents taken, will allow the caster to specialize in certain schools of magic, increasing or strengthening the spells in his possession.

Final Considerations

Toon’s Legends is an excellent product that makes the simplicity of the rules its strong point. The system in just a few elements allows for very in-depth customization, regardless of whether the warrior uses a melee or ranged weapon. In any case, the action branch and the associated die will always be taken into consideration. It is a d20-based system that prefers to eliminate unnecessary complications, preferring an approach linked to common sense and narrative.

I recommend Toon’s Legends to anyone who wants to try a simple and at the same time exciting system, never banal. The challenges for players will be difficult and it will take a good deal of planning to survive the dangers that await adventurers!
