Last Raid [ D&D5e ] | Review

Feb 13, 2025 | reviews

Before delving into the actual review of Last Raid, I’d like to thank the APS Association Uno Critico for sending us a copy.

The setting for the adventure is that of Norse myth. This story can therefore be played using manuals such as Journey to Ragnarok by Mana Project Studio or Svilland by Dream Realm Storytellers. Or, alternatively, it can be played with the basic manual of the world’s best-known role-playing game with classic characters.

If you want to buy it after this review, you can find this adventure directly on the DrivethruRPG site for $3.12, just over €3.

Project Overview

Last Raid is a self-contained adventure designed for characters of levels 2 to 5. It consists of three acts lasting approximately three hours in total. It was created for a multi-table session, but can also be played on traditional tables. The supplement does not include pre-generated characters. You will therefore have to create the characters with the table, or on your own should you wish to present it as a one-shot.

The Plot, a Track You Can’t Escape From

As always when it comes to presenting an adventure module I’ll try not to make spoilers while providing you with what you need to evaluate the product.

Last Raid involves players as Vikings at the service of King Thorvald Red-Haired. They know each other as they have been raiding coastal villages together for an entire season.

The plot opens with the latest raid on a village and the discovery of a sacred place to plunder before they can return to their village. There they will face the fury of the elements and visions of death and destruction linked to Ragnarok.

From the very first strokes, it is evident that there is no particular choice for the characters other than to follow a decidedly linear plot. This is not a flaw in itself, especially considering that this is a one-shot. This is all the more valid bearing in mind that it was written for a multi-table, hence a demonstration event.

What I appreciated less, however, is that, especially at the beginning of the plot, there is a strong intervention of the NPCs as deus ex machina in case the characters fail the tests.

Last Raid Aesthetics Review

The supplement consists of around twenty pages in PDF format. The layout is the classic two-column and is presented by a clear and structured table of contents that allows easy navigation through the plot. All the chosen fonts are easy to read. The text is punctuated by light blue boxes that add detail and provide suggestions to the master for plot management. The tables, which are not redundant, also fit very well into the structure chosen to distribute the text.

Not too rich in terms of illustrations, but it compensates very well with the choice of colours. They recall the cold, snowy environments that form the backdrop to the plot.

At the end you will find the main opponents and NPCs with their cards, as well as the map of Odin’s temple.

Conclusions of Last Raid Review

In overall terms, Last Raid is a straightforward one-shot that is easy to bring to the table. Since it is very guided, it can be easily handled even by novice game masters and novice players.

I appreciated the presence, albeit in the margins, of a box suggesting the use of security systems given the underlying themes of the plot.

The NPCs are well described and the opponents are calibrated to the challenge for the level of the characters.

In conclusion, especially given the cost of the supplement, if you want a plot that is easy to play and you love scenarios based on Norse mythology, then consider Last Raid for your table.
